Elective Delivery
Transparency Home
Babies born prior to 39 weeks gestation face higher rates of complications and are more likely to spend time in the neonatal intensive care unit. This measure looks at the percent of deliveries performed between 37 and 39 weeks gestation that were not medically necessary.

After births for most medical exclusions are removed, the rate is calculated by dividing the number of patients with elective deliveries between 37 and 39 weeks gestation by the number of patients delivering babies between 37 and 39 weeks. Washington hospitals have decreased the statewide average from 15.3% in the third quarter of 2010 to 5.4% in the fourth quarter of 2011. This is a decrease of 65%.

2011 best practice goal: 7% or lower
