Percentage of patients who received appropriate care for severe sepsis and septic shock. Severe sepsis is a potentially life-threatening complication of an infection that occurs when an infection overwhelms the body’s natural defenses. Septic shock is sepsis that has become progressively worse resulting in significant decreases in blood pressure and potential organ failure.
Patients who receive appropriate care for sepsis have decreases in organ failure, overall reductions in death in the hospital, length of stay, and costs of care.
